It's One Building

In 1919, an extension of 538 Johnson was designed by architects Buchman & Kahn — this extension is known as 75 Stewart due to the fire escape stairs which exit onto Stewart Avenue. It's one building, as determined in a 2017 court case between tenants and the building owner (which is another long story).

It is concrete fireproof construction, and has a basement level with 16' ceilings, which reduce as the floors ascend, topping off at around 14' on the fourth floor. There are 3 fire escape stairwells, and 2 elevators. It shares a party wall with the 1916 building, connected by self-closing firedoors.

In 1919 the factory was known as a "Wonder of Brooklyn", outfitted with the most up-to-date machinery and environment for the workers. Although it is essentially a simple design, there are some decorative elements along the cornice, a mix of terra cotta and concrete coping, and of course the enormous windows which maximize light exposure from all directions.
